Architecture is the discipline of the building, not the image; the best buildings require a meticulous orchestration of materials, components, surfaces, minimums, maximums, client needs, and desires. All of these must be kept at hand by the architect so that no element may unconsciously overtake another. Each element must be measured to its circumstance, so that the total assemblage, the building, fits in its place, not only now but for an undetermined period. Great architecture requires recognition of the other, rather than gratification of the self; this is true at all scales, in the placement a water closet the same as the composition of the principal façade, same still as the building mass against its surroundings.
