Located in the 17th poorest
county in the nation, Providence canyon is not only a natural wonder but a hope
of Stewart County. With the right cultivation it can become the economic driver
that the area desperately needs. The canyon was formed by poor farming
practices in the 19th century leading to the erosion of over 175 feet of soil
and revealing 4 beautiful layers of earth in the process creating Georgia’s
Little Grand Canyon. To celebrate these magnificent views, they are curated.
The occupant lead through a series of transitions to induce better
understanding of the canyon beyond. First objectified through a square opening,
as a picture on a wall. Then focused on a single point, through a scope. Then
given as a panorama, on a belvedere. Finally, taken away and abstracted into
architectural form, only the light remaining from its original context. The
experience concluding with a stairway to the main canyon rim trail. Oriented to
remember its agricultural beginnings during the summer solstice the translucent
walls of the building will illuminate as a bright lantern, to celebrate the
past and growth to come in Stewart county.
